About an applicant's right to view their recommendation

Follow

When an applicant makes a recommendation request, they have the option to either waive or not waiver their right to view their recommendation. You will see the option they chose at the bottom of their request:

Applicants that waive the right to view their recommendation

Applicants that do waive the right to view their recommendation indicate to the school that if they become a student at the institution, they will not be able to view their recommendation letters as part of their student file, even if the rest of their application materials are included in their student file.

Applicants that do not waive the right to view their recommendation

Applicants that do not waive their right to view their recommendation indicate to the school that if they become a student at the institution, they want to be able to view their recommendation letters as part of their student file.

However, this does not mean they can view their letters through the ApplyWeb recommendation system. Applicants can never see their recommendations via ApplyWeb. Applicants choosing this option can view their letters only later, if they are a student at the institution and request a copy of their student file.

Caution

Some recommenders choose not to write letters for applicants that do not waive their right, as they may not feel they can be completely transparent in their recommendation. Likewise, some schools do not accept or take into serious consideration recommendations for a student who has not waived their right, as they may feel that the recommender can't be completely transparent.
